UnSiriusXM Radio Online

The Value proposition for SiriusXM Radio Online will let you listen to SiriusXM on your smart-phone and thru services like Sonos for an extra $3 / month (in addition to the 12.99 monthly fee).  Currently SiriusXM offers 214 channels to traditional subscribers.  A full 124 channels are NOT available to SiriusXM online subscribers. I've listed them below.  Seeing as I prob spend 95% of my listening time on 43,44,47 and the comedy channels I don't think this a good value prop for me.  Additionally, you can't get most sports, news, weather and traffic. Will it be a good value add for you?

  1. This was a big problem for me as well. I use my Sirius service (mostly) for two main reasons: Howard Stern and NFL coverage. When the iPhone app came out for Sirius last year, I was excited to use it until I found out that not only did it cost more per month, but SiriusXM's most popular channels were simply not available for whatever reason. I understand the NFL live coverage being an issue since companies have exclusive broadcasting rights for various formats (TV, radio, online), but not having Howard 100 and Howard 101 on the app left me scratching my head.

However, things have changed somewhat since the Howard Stern crew signed a new deal to stay on SiriusXM for 5 more years. Now Howard is available on the iPhone app, but still no live NFL games or many of the channels listed above. I am still hesitant to pay $3 a month to listen to Sirius on my phone during the walk from my car to class, so I just use the free 7-day trial over and over...

Speaking of free trials, mine is up and I need to use someone's email address....

  2. I suspect some content providers wish to control their distribution such that SiriusXM doesn't cannibalize sales (e.g. the NFL app and online games) "Independent" sales of which Sirius gets no cut. In any case with a fractured, shrinking market and competing services like Spotify! potentially on the horizon - this isn't a forward looking strategy for success. I totally would've signed up without news, weather or radio. but would've paid the $3 for the alternative radio only - the content is much more than music. Not the most popular product in their inventory's "Long Tail" but easy market to grab "by the balls."

I'd suggest they focus going down that tail - something they control - than wait for the market structure to align and streamline negotiating content/distribution rights in the industry. something they certainly can't predict or control.
